Paleo Diet

PALEO BLOG

Ask the top athletes in the gym what the secret to their success is, and the first answer you’re likely to get is not the outrageous number or reps they perform, or the weight they load on a bar, or the number of hours they log in the gym. The answer to how to significantly improve performance is diet. If you’ve hit a wall in your crossfit improvement, would love to drop five more pounds, or “get” your first pull up, it’s time to look not at how you work out, but at how you fuel your work.

  1. The Contest:

Hi all! Although I know you are all in this challenge for your health, there is, of course, the more quantifiable and “crofffitty” motivation of bragging rights at stake.

So without further ado here are the details of the contest: At the opening meeting on Saturday September 4th there will be the opportunity to set several benchmarks for your performance so come ready to exercise. Among the choices will be max unbroken pull-ups, push ups, or box jumps; lifts, and 1000m row or 800m run times, etc. In addition, if weight loss or clothes size are important to you you should weigh and/or measure yourself.

Then, during Columbus Day weekend, you will have the chance to repeat the same movements. You can choose any one or two metrics to post in the gym as your “greatest gain/loss” from the paleo challenge, and the other participants will vote for the man and woman with the biggest accomplishment over the course of the 5 weeks. The male and female winners will each be awarded a Captain Caveman t-shirt, and the title of “Least Evolved” man or woman in the gym.

So get those pantry’s cleaned out and get ready for the competition…….

Tune in later this week for advice on getting ready for the Challenge and the answer to what the heck is a pemmican and where do you find it in the zoo?

  2. Hey everyone- just a reminder that today’s WOD is also a really good benchmark for your before and after performance. If you made it to today’s WOD then be thinking of OTHER measurements you’d like to track over the month. In the mean time here are five things you can do to get ready for the paleo challenge.

    1) Clean out your fridge and pantry- you can’t cheat with foods that aren’t available.
    2) Scout out your local farmers market- http://www.stayarlington.com/index.cfm/12356
    3) Check out Alison’s selection of food to order- http://humblegourmand.com/
    4) If you are a coffee with cream drinker go get some coconut milk to put in your coffee monday morning (sacrifice has its limits)
    5) Polish off all the beer and wine in your house Friday night which will remove the temptation of drinking it during the challenge, with the added benefit of lowering your baseline score on anything you attempt as your benchmarks. You’ll have nowhere to go but up!**

**OK, obviously that last one is terrible health advice, and you probably shouldn’t follow it. If you must remove temptation from your house, bring it to ME Saturday at the gym- and for a small tax I’ll keep it all cold and safe.

Meanwhile I hope you are all getting excited for next week. I”m looking forward to seeing everyone Saturday.
